India Post Payment Bank (IPPB) was launched by the Ministry of Communication of the Government of India operating under the India Post division of the Department of Post in 2015. The Payment Bank of India Post was governed by the Reserve Bank of India like other banks but there are some specific restrictions added by the government of India and the Reserve Bank of India. The first bank was launched by the government in 2017 in Raipur and Ranchi, Chhattisgarh. The project of the Indian Payment Bank was approved by the Union Cabinet minister with a fund of Rs 1345 to set up the first phase of the India Post Payment Bank.
The model of payment banks in India was launched by the Reserve Bank of India with the restriction of issuing Credit Cards. Under this scheme, Bharti Airtel organization launched its first Airtel Payments bank. The government of India also planned to reach the urban/ tribal areas of the country to connect with the mainstream via the India Post division of the Ministry of Communication.
